Three-dimensional Self-similar Fractal Light in Canonical Resonators

Unstable canonical resonators can possess eigenmodes with a fractal intensity structure [Karman et al., Nature 402, 138(1999)]. In one particular transverse plane, the intensity is not merely statistically fractal, but self-similar [Courtial and Padgett, PRL 85, 5320 (2000)]. This can be explained using a combination of diffraction and imaging with magnification greater than one. Here we show that the same mechanism also shapes the intensity cross-section in the longitudinal direction into a self-similar fractal, but with a different magnification. This results in three-dimensional, self-similar, fractal intensity structure in the eigenmodes

Cobasal Reading Adoptions Present Unique Problems

The selection of basal reading materials reflects crucial decisions made periodically by most school districts in our country. Considering that approximately 20 million students are enrolled in public school grades 1-6 in the United States , it is not difficult to understand why the selection of basal materials receives such considerable attention. In this vast market the publishers of basal programs compete for high stakes, and the selection process is important to the adopting district from both an educational and economic perspective. Yet selection committees often undertake the decision-making process without adequately assessing all the ramifications of their choices. On the surface the task is to choose the best books, but to do this numerous issues must be considered. The publishers\u27 presentations must be critically reviewed. Problems of ordering and warehousing materials must be solved. Pupil placement, instructional management, and pupil progress must also be examined in light of the materials chosen. These issues present problems in any adoption, but when more than one basal is adopted the problems are often compounded. The purpose of this article is to acquaint teachers, administrators, and parents with the unique problems to be dealt with when adopting two or more basal programs, and to suggest potential solutions to these problems

Disruptive Effect: A Phenomenon in Oral Reading

The major purpose of the present study is to examine the effect that an unknown word has on the oral reading of second grade children. Specifically, the study is concerned with the possible increased probability of error on words that are in close proximity to an unknown word. Additionally, the study examines the degree of disruptiveness created by unknown words in different grammatical positions, and the degree of disruptiveness of various types of unknown words

Integrating Service, Community, and Teaching: Inspiring Students While Building a Mentoring Program for African American Youth

This teaching note describes how the author used various social work practice skills to design and effectively implement a community-based local mentoring program for African American adolescents. This program served as a case study for social work students who practice in rural areas to learn about community development since our program lacks formal rural community practice training module in its curriculum. This article details the process and provides practical examples and recommendations for social work faculty on how to infuse community service experience into the classroom
